Helping keep fish more fresh throughout the day to sell at market.
As the adage goes, teach a man how to fish and you feed him for life. However, on the shores of Lake Naivasha, Kenya, the fisherfolk are finding that the fish they catch in the morning are no longer fresh by the afternoon. This means they are either not edible, or of a poor nutritional content. Therefore they’re not ideal for including in their diet, nor are they as valuable at market. That’s why we’re supporting the innovation and testing of a lightweight, solar-powered fridge for the fisherfolk. Being able to refrigerate the fish that are caught allows the fish to stay more fresh throughout the day, to remain edible, and maintain a high price when it comes to selling at market. This allows the fisherfolk to benefit both from their diet, but also an increased cash income. Innovative funding also means that renting the fridge will cost the equivalent income of only two fish per day, making it directly targeted at helping the poorest families feed themselves.
